Living close to the woodland we're often walking or riding through. We benefit first hand from the enchanting landscape and see the joy it brings to so many others. We were sold on the idea of bringing a small part of that to those who perhaps are unable to explore the woods for themselves.


It has been a joy to work with musicians, mindfulness coaches, sound therapists and Gillian at the Raincliffe Wood Community Enterprise.


Now the base of this unique tour has been set, we look forward to collaborating and being part of its development as more sounds, music, 360 images and photography is added.

About This Tour


An ongoing community project, by a collective of local creatives.



Paving a way to make the woodland more accessible, Raincliffe Wood Community Enterprise teamed up with local creatives in a bid to let more people explore this magical space.


This ever changing, ongoing project combines recordings, music, 360 degree images and photography in this 'virtual tour'. We hope this will help people explore the beauty of this landscape. Some, perhaps, for the very first time.


As new content becomes available we'll update this tour, so do check back and watch this space grow.

An Evening With Bats


Hear the sounds of Bats at Throxenby Mere



Flitting out of the rising darkness like shadows, these nocturnal mammals are as charismatic
as they are misunderstood. Britain is home to 18 species of bat, the largest being the noctule which weighs as little as four £1 coins, and the smallest, the pipistrelle, weighing as little as a
2p coin, is known to gobble up more than 500 insects in an hour! Whether you are watching
them in woodlands or skimming over a river, the sight of a bat quickens the heart.


On a clear moonlit night in May, the sight of four species, the Noctule, Soprano Pipistrelle,
Common Pipistrelle and Daubenton’s thrilled a group of bat enthusiasts over Throxenby
Mere. Listen to the magic sounds of that evening and the expertise of the Scarborough
Naturalists.

Ayton Castle


A 13th century fortified manor house



Ayton Castle was originally a 13th-century fortified manor house built by William de Ayton, but it was attacked by raiding Scots after their triumph at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.


In 1410, Sir Ralph Eure built a Pele Tower on the site, a keep-like dwelling surrounded by a defensive wall that was common in the Borders. By the 16th century the family moved to a more luxurious estate, leaving the castle to slowly crumble.


Its stones were used to build the village and as a cowshed, before the ruin was restored in recent years.


On the riverside below are the outlines of several fishponds that date fro mthe same period, when they were used for breeding and storing fish.

Bridget Cousins


Gentle harp music in The Meadow



Bridget Cousins, harper and composer, is one half of Scarborough music duo The Blow-ins.


Enjoy these beautiful recordings taken on a summer's day within the meadow.

Cock Hollow


A natural ampitheatre full of birdsong



Cock Hollow is a large sandstone Quarry used in the latter part of the 19 th century. The rock removed from the site was used in buildings. If you look closely at the face of the rock you will see small holes, suggesting gunpowder was used to dislodge the stone.


Down hill from the main workings the ground is pitted with a number of overgrown hollows which looks like less-organised surface digging for stone and could well predate the main workings on the slope above. It may be these diggings that gave rise to the name Cock Hollow as the ‘cock’ element may derive from the Old English ‘cocc’ meaning a heap - a reference, perhaps, to piles of waste stone littering the ground which would have resulted from the surface diggings.


These day, Cock Hollow is an excellent spot to stop and listen to the birdsong the high stone walls acting as a natural ampitheatre.

Hazel Head


Home of green-woodworking workshops



Now the site of many of our green-woodworking workshops, the abundance of hazel in this area suggests it was originally used as a coppice. Coppicing is an ancient technique that involves cutting stems from the tree to create many useful wood products, and in doing so, replicates the action of the mega fauna that lived here thousands of years ago, and increases the lifespan of the trees.


It is possible that some of this coppiced wood was utilised in charcoal making, and possibly used in the forge that gives Forge Valley its name.

Lady Edith's Drive


A former private carriageway



Lady Edith's Drive was a private carriageway created in the 1860s by the second Lord of Londesborough, named after his wife and sometimes also used to refer to the older carriage drive through the wood known as Low Road.


Toll gates were installed at either end of the drive, though it was free to the public at Easter and the public were prohibited from the rest of the wood, which were used for game shooting.


Lord Londesborough created several other routes for his own enjoyment: Lady Mildred's Ride and Lady Ida's Walk were named after two of his daughters and Lady Grace's Ride after his daughter-in-law.

Claire invites you to join her on 2 mindfulness practices. She has been trained by the
Mindfulness Association and follows the BAMBA good practice guidelines. 


Stress, anxiety, constant illnesses all can be attributed, to some extent, to our busy lives and
not taking the time for us. You can do simple things in a short space of time that can help 
calm your racing mind and help you get through the day in a less stressful way.


The technique which can help with this is Mindfulness. A fancy name for just being in the 
present; being aware of what is going on around you and within you. All you have to do is be
yourself and be prepared to just be in the moment! Being Mindful we all do things every day
which we don’t think about.

Old Man's Mouth


A spring within Forge Valley



Old Man's Mouth is a spring that flows into a trough beside the road near the site of the cottage by Ayton Forge.


Take extra care of vehicles if visiting, as this is very close to the main road passing through Forge Valley.

Row Brow Wood


Steep walks and mixed woodland



Row Brow Wood is a narrow strip of mixed woodland on a steep east-facing slope with good views over Scarborough.


The only paths through it are at the northern end, where the deep holloways of Row Brow Road and Shield's Trod descend the slope.


Lady Mildred's Ride ends at the former, leaving the rest of the wood a rough scramble. A path does trace the edge of the moor above though, linking to the A170 up Stepney Hill and providing access to the ruined folly on Seamer Beacon.

Scarborough Racecourse


Perched high above Scarborough



Scarborough Racecourse was located on Irton Moor from 1728 until 1907 and the site of its grandstand pavilion can still be made out alongside the path at the top of Row Brown Wood.


After its closure a wireless station was established here in 1912 by the Royal Navy and played an important role in World War 2, relaying signals to Bletchley Park that lead to the sinking of the Bismarck.


It was transferred to GCHQ during the Cold War in 1965 and remains in use as the world's longest continuous serving site for signals intelligence.

Show Ground


A large opening perfect for events



The showground is right at the heart of our woodland, located just up from the old Sawmill site. This holds our annual celebration of the woodland, The Secret Wood, in August when over 1000 people come to enjoy the woods. On quieter days it is the perfect picnic spot whilst out exploring the woodland.

The Blow-ins


Live at Cock Hollow



The Blow-ins are Phil Bennett and Bridget Cousins who are based in Scarborough and often
enjoy walking in Raincliffe woods.  After an uphill trek on a warm summer day it was a delight to sit and play our instruments in Cock Hollow.


After we settled on a couple of tree stumps to begin playing, a curious robin flew in and began to peck about. We often find the birds sing louder when we sing outdoors - whether it’s because they want to join in or if they feel their territory has been invaded we aren’t sure, though we would like to think it’s the former.

The Lonely Tiger

The Meadow


A beautiful opening in the heart of the woodland



An ancient Meadow that is a haven for insects and birds. The area is known to have been present since at least 1810, but could be much older. Evidence suggest that it was originally used as temporary grazing whilst moving livestock through the woods from the moor to the valley before winter.


Now managed by Scarborough Conservation volunteers and owned by the Woodland Trust, it acts as a ‘Wood Pasture’. This is an area that would have been cleared either by wildlife or livestock and is a fantastic site for wildflowers and insects.


If you ever wanted to go on a bug safari, this is the place to go.

Hi, I’m Kate, a qualified sound therapist based in Scarborough.


Healing through soundnd is actually an ancient practice used to treat a broad range of health conditions. Throxenby Mere


An old glacial lake full of wildlife



Originally a glacial lake, the mere has changed much over the years. The mere as we know it was created when the dam was created at the south end of the mere around 1860-1870. This was possibly done by William Denison, 2nd Lord Londesborough, who was a big hunting enthusiast. It is probable he created the mere to attract in wildlife for his shooting parties.


These days the mere is an excellent spot for watching water fowl, and over the summer evenings spotting bats flitting across the surface.

Under The Mere


A Hydrophonic Experience with Ideosound



Throxenby mere is a glacial lake formed at the end of the last ice age. Today it is managed
by Throxenby Anglers and is home to a wide range of creatures, including amphibians and
invertebrates.


In early spring, look for glutinous masses of frog spawn, or strings of toad spawn, often in
deeper water. Newts are best seen just after dusk in the early summer by scanning the
pond margins with a torch – check also for Daubenton’s bats, sometimes seen skimming low
over the surface at dusk.


Summer is the best time for pond-dipping – expect water beetles, diving beetles, water fleas, dragonfly nymphs, caddisfly larvae and aquatic snails.
